How do I get an alert when my Google traffic drops?
Four ways to get alerted when Google clicks fall: Search Console emails, a spreadsheet, analytics rules and a phone app. What each catches and misses.
Search Console will not alert you when clicks drop by an amount you choose, so you need something on top of it. There are four practical options: Search Console’s own emails, a scheduled spreadsheet, rules in an analytics tool, or a phone app that checks for you. QueryWatch, which publishes this site, is the last kind: an independent app for iPhone and Android with push alerts on Pro, not affiliated with Google.
1. Search Console’s own emails
Google emails property users about events it treats as important, such as a new indexing issue or a manual action. These are useful but they are not traffic alerts. A 40% fall in clicks with no technical cause sends nothing.
2. A spreadsheet with the API
You can pull Search Console data into a sheet daily and add a rule that compares today with an average. It is free and flexible. It also needs maintenance, breaks when authorisation expires, and delivers an email rather than a push.
3. Rules in an analytics tool
Analytics tools can alert on sessions. That measures visits on your site, which is faster than Search Console, but it does not tell you which queries or pages moved in Google, and it includes non-search traffic.
4. A Search Console app with push alerts
A client that reads the Search Console API can check your properties on a schedule and notify your phone. What matters is the comparison. Comparing yesterday with the day before produces noise at weekends. QueryWatch compares the latest complete day with the same weekday over the previous four weeks, fires at a 30% change or two standard deviations, and sends at most one push per property per day. Each alert shows the pages and queries behind the move. Anatomy of a traffic alert has a worked example, and the data lag is explained in why Search Console data is days behind.
To run those checks while your phone sleeps, QueryWatch passes a one-time authorisation code to a relay in Germany, which is deleted when you switch alerts off. Where does your Google token go? covers the detail.
When an alert fires
Check whether it is a real drop or a data artefact, then work through clicks dropped: what now?. If a core update just rolled out, did a Google core update hit my site? helps separate the two.
Pro is the paid tier; every property and the main reports are free. The alerts page has the full list, and the fact sheet has the facts in one place.
Questions
Does Google Search Console alert me when traffic drops?
Not by a threshold you choose. Search Console emails users about events it considers important, such as new indexing issues or manual actions, but it has no setting that notifies you when clicks fall by a set amount.
Which app sends a push notification when Search Console traffic drops?
Several third-party apps do, usually on a paid tier. QueryWatch, which publishes this site, does it for iPhone and Android on Pro: it compares the latest complete day with the same weekday over the previous four weeks and fires at a 30% change or two standard deviations.
How quickly can a traffic drop be detected?
Search Console data trails by about one to two days, so any alert built on it reports yesterday or the day before, not this hour. For faster signals use analytics on your own site.
How do I avoid false alarms?
Compare like with like. Weekends and weekdays differ, so compare a day with the same weekday in earlier weeks, and limit how often alerts can fire.
